New Era in York

As from the first Sunday of Advent (that is next Sunday 1st December) there will be a Latin Low Mass at 5pm every Sunday in the Church of St Wilfrid in York.  It will be followed by Rosary and Benediction at 6pm.   This replaces the 4pm Mass at the Church of the English Martyrs in York which is now discontinued.

This development follows the arrival of Oratorian fathers at St Wilfrid's Church and the expectation that a permanent Oratory will be erected there.  It puts the Latin Mass in York on a much firmer basis, as we can now be sure of there being a priest each week.

Unfortunately, car parking is much more difficult at St Wilfrid's Church.  There is a small car park opposite the theatre in St Leonards, which I believe costs £3.50 for two hours.  Alternatively, it is possible to use the park and ride service.

At this point, I would like to express gratitude to Fr Bane at English Martyrs' Church for accommodating the Latin Mass in the last few years; and also to our celebrants, Fr David Smith, Fr James Callagan and Fr Strphen Maughan, who have served us very well.

Thanks for this information. Just to update the Car Park information: There is no longer a council car park in St Leonard's Place.

Nearest council car parks are
Bootham Row (£2.30 per hour up to 6pm and flat rate £2 thereafter)
Union Terrace (£2 per hour up to 6pm and flat rate £2 thereafter)

A cheaper car park is available at Foss Bank, which is less than 10 min walk to St Wilfrid's (£1 per hour)but please note that this car park closes at 8pm.

Alternativley park and ride stops are available as follows:

Green Line 2 (Rawcliffe Bar P&R) stops in Museum St.

Red Line 7(Designer Outlet P&R) stops in Rougier St

White Line 3 (Askham Bar P&R) stops in Rougier St.

Yellow Line 8 (Grimston Bar P&R) stops in Picadilly

Silver Line 9 (Monks Cross P&R) stops in the Pavement or Rougier St.

Anyone Driving into York should be aware that Lendel Bridge is closed to private cars between 10.30am and 5pm 7 days a week (although it is still open to buses, taxis, bicycles and pedestrians)

Just a quick note to add to the information re car parks. There is also a council car park on Esplanade just the other side of the River Ouse, literally by the riverside near Lendal Bridge. This is only a few minutes walk away from the church. Also only a few minutes away on the West/South bank of the river is Limited (as in spaces, not time) parking on Tanner Row and further up North Street.

A further note re car parks. If you're lucky enough to be a York resident. Get yourself a residents badge from the council. You will only have to pay for parking (reduced rates) up to 6pm. Parking after this time is free for badge holders.
