Feast of the Assumption

On Friday 15th August at 6pm,there will be a sung Mass of the Assumption at the Church if St Wilfrid in York. The Feast of the Assumption is, of course a Holyday of Obligation.

This will only be Low Mass due to the Solemn Mass taking place the next day also at St. Wilfrid's at 12pm.

Gregorian Chant Compline (by candlelight) will take place though on Friday at 9pm in the church of St. Mary, Bishophill Junior, York YO1 6EN. We are grateful for the support from the vicar, who allows us access to this church, the oldest in the city of York for the public celebration of the traditional Catholic Divine Office.

Was there a reason for the 6pm mass *today*, which was ON the Assumption and would have fulfilled the obligation, not being a high mass?

If a high mass was not possible, people can attend a low mass perfectly well and fulfil the obligation, but this Saturday mass seems to be superfluous: a Mass of the Assumption that is not on the Assumption (though in the octave) and not satisfying the necessary obligation. Why have it at all?

The reason for having the sung Mass on the Saturday was that the polyphonic choir was not available on the Friday evening.

No Mass is superfluous.
