Latin Mass in a Barn

Brendan Kavanagh is a musician with a very large following on Youtube.  He usually plays public pianos in location s ,like St Pancras Station, and specialises in Boogie Woogie music.  However, he has an interest in the Latin Mass, and has released a video of the beginning of a Missa Cantata that took part in a barn that he has converted into a chapel.  Here is the link.

I expect that more will be available soon.

Here is a better picture of the pilgrimage passing the Margaret Clitherow Shrine in the Shambles in York.

Pilgrimage in Honour of St Margaret Clitherow and the Martyrs of York.

This pilgrimage was a great success with around 250 in the congregation at the Mass,  Here are some pictures.

Report on the Walsingham Pilgrimage

The Latin Mass Society's 2024 pilgrimage to Walsingham is over.  Over 200 pilgrims walked the 57 miles from Ely to Walsingham.  Some of these had had extended the pilgrimage by stating the previous day in Cambridge.  An even smaller number had started much earlier and walked all the way from London.  The pilgrimage was supported by a further dozen people who did the catering, moved the baggage, provided the toilets and prepared for the Masses.

A flavour of the joyful nature of the pilgrimage can be seen in the following clip of pilgrims arriving after the first day of walking.

Here are some more pictures taken en route.

This is how toilets are provided for the pilgrims at each stopping point.

The destination is reached.

Some pilgrims stayed overnight and attended Mass is the Slipper Chapel on the Monday morning.  Here is a clip.

Good Attendance at Assumption Mass

The Solemn Mass for the Feast of the Assumption last night at the York Oratory was very well attended.  The picture below shows how full the church was.

It was also a musical treat, the musical setting being Palastrina's  Assumpta est Maria.  There was also the motet, Ave Maria, by Parsons.

I did not get a chance to count the size of the congregation, but I would estimate more than 200.  I noticed many new faces.  It was also very noticeable how many young people were present.  Again I do not have any figures, but would estimate that two thirds of the congregation was under the age of 30.

Sunday Mass in Yarm

I attended the Latin Mass offered by Fr David Smith last Sunday at the Church of St Mary and St Romual in Yarm.  There were 12 in the congregation, which was a smaller number than I expected.  Clearly something needs to be done to publicise this Mass,  Can you help?

Here are the details:

          Low Mass   2pm every Sunday

Church of St Mary & St Romual. High Street, Yarm, TS15 9AA

The church is a very fine one designed by George Goldie, an d opened in 1860  There have very few changes to it since its opening, other than the installation of a forward altar.  It is easy to find and parking is available nearby, which I understand is free on Sundays.

Synodality

This is old news, but nevertheless worth repeating.  On both Facebook and Twitter, the Vatican published a pole on the subject of Synodality.  Not surprisingly, the posts were taken down soon after a consistent trend emerged.  Here are the results after 6,908 votes had been cast.

Covadonga Pilgrimage attracts 1600 walkers

1,600 people who took part in the walking pilgrimage from Oviedo to Covadonga in Spain,  I am not sure how this compares with last year, but the extensive video coverage available on the internet would suggest that it is a substantial increase on last year.  The pilgrims were arranged in 32 chapters, of which 8 were from outside Spain.

An instruction, originating in Rome, prevented the final Mass from taking place at the basilica in Covadonga, so it was rearranged to take place earlier in the day under a marquee at the campsite.  This change did nothing to dampen the spirits of the pilgrims, and, arguably, boosted the number of pilgrims attending.

Walsingham Pilgrimage

The Latin Mass Society's pilgrimage to the Shrine of Our Lady of Walsingham is approaching.  Those intending to walk the 57 miles from Ely to Walsingham should gather in Ely on the evening of Thursday 22nd August.  Those wishing to to make a single day pilgrimage can gather at the Walsingham Shrine for a Mass at 2pm.

Full details and the application form, which must be completed by all walkers, can be found on the Latin Mass Society website,  https://lms.org.uk/   Don't leave it too late to book.

Changes to Latin Masses in the Northern Part of the Diocese

The Latin Mass that has been offered at 3pm on Sundays at the church of St Andrew in Teesville is to be discontinued.  The last Mass was today, 28th July.  The reason is that Fr Sellers has been moved to Whitby.  We are very grateful to Fr Sellers for offering this Mass since January 2023.

In its place will be a Mass at the church of St Mary and St Romuald in Yarm.  This will take place at 2pm on Sundays, starting on 4th August.  It will be offered by Fr David Smith, who used to say Latin Masses at Catterick Garrison.

The Church of St Mary and St Romuald is an interesting one, designed by George Goldie, the architect that designed st Wilfrid's in York.  Here is a picture.

We are, of course grateful to Fr Smith for making this provision.  We are also grateful to Bishop Drainey, who has made this arrangement to ensure that Latin Masses continue in the northern part of the diocese.

Latin Mass at Wigan Cancelled

Some months ago, the Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest started saying a Latin Mass on Sundays and Wednesdays at the church of St Mary in Wigan.  This was with the approval of Rt Rev Malcolm McMahon, the Archbishop of Liverpool, although he did ask that the Masses should not be publicly advertised.

Despite the lack of publicity, these Masses were very well attended, with a congregation of 90 on Sundays and 40 on Wednesdays.

It has now been announced that the archbishop has instructed that these Masses be discontinued.  There is a very short notice about this development on the church's website, but it does not give any explanation.

Petition to Save the Latin Mass

Yesterday, Sir James McMillan, the Catholic composer started a petition to stop the ban on the traditional Latin Mass.  Within 16 hours, the petition had gained 1600 signatures.  The petition can be found at Change.org   Here is a quick reference.

Youth Lead the Way

The Chartres Pilgrimage, that takes place every year over the Feast of Pentecost, has a growing popularity.  It is a grueling three day walk from Paris to Chartres that attracts traditional Catholics (mostly young people) from all over the world.  This year 18,000 pilgrims took part, which compares with 16,000 in 2023.  No doubt there would have been many more had the organisers not found it necessary to limit the numbers for practical and logistical reasons.

The Oviedo to Cavadongo Pilgrimage, which takes place every July, is a Spanish version of the Chartres Pilgrimage.  Last year it attracted 3,000 pilgrims, which was a huge increase on the previous year.  Reports from the organisers indicate that bookings for 2024 are well up on last year.  A few days ago, it became known that the Dicastery for Divine Worship had banned the Solemn Latin Mass in the great Shrine Church in Cavadongo that was to have  been the culmination of the pilgrimage.

It does seem that the Vatican authorities are getting a little desperate in their attempts to curtail the use of the Latin Mass.  However, all is not lost.  The pilgrimage will go ahead with the final Mass offered at a temporary altar set up at the final campsite.  After the Mass, the pilgrims will process to the Shrine, where there will sing the Te Deum before the exposed Blessed Sacrament.  I have little doubt that the publicity generated by the banning of the final Mass will have the result of boosting the numbers attending, and serving to promote the Latin Mass cause generally.  Here is a picture from last year's Cavadongo Pilgrimage.

In late August, there will be another opportunity for young people in particular to join a walking pilgrimage, and to demonstrate their support for the Latin Mass.  This is the Walsingham Pilgrimage organised by the Latin Mass Society of England and Wales.  It takes place over the August Bank Holiday weekend and involves walking 76 miles.  It has grown steadily in size in recent years, attracting about 200 pilgrims last year.  For more information and to make a booking, visit the Latin Mass Society website.

Please note that the Latin Mass that normally takes place at the Church of Our Lady and St Peter Chanel in Hull on Thursday evenings will NOT take place on Ascension Day.  This is because Fr Massie has to say a Novus Ordo Mass at that time.

Pilgrimage in Preston

Pilgrimage in honour of the Martyrs of England & Wales

Saturday 4th May

There will be a pilgrimage in honour of the English Martyrs in Preston on Saturday 4th May. The pilgrimage will begin with devotions in the Church of St Walburge at 10.30am before pilgrims process to the Church of the English Martyrs, which is a distance of about a mile. There will be a Solemn Mass offered by the Canons of the Institute of Christ the King at the English Martyrs Church beginning at around 11.30 and this will be followed by veneration of relics. Tea and coffee will be provided after Mass.

The postcode for St Walberge’s Church is PR2 2QE, and for English Martyrs Church is PR1 1NA.

Here is a picture of the procession leaving St Walburge’s taken in 2018.

Triduum Cancelled in Diocese of Westminster

The Latin Mass Society has issued a press release (reproduced below) about the Archbishop of Wstminster refusing peremission for the celebration of the sacred services of  Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Holy Saturday in the Diocese of Westminster.  This is despite these services having taken place in the diocese fcor almost 30 years.

It is interesting to note that the Archbishop states that his decision is "for trhe sake of the wider provision", although it is difficult to understand how the wider provision is affected by having the services in their ancient form at one locatiion.

Feast of the Epiphany

Saturday 6th January is the Feast of thr Epiphany and a Holyday of Obligation.  There will be two Latin Masses at the York Oratory:

9.15am             Low Mass asis usual on Saturdays

12.10pm           High Mass with music by Mozart, Sheppard and Palistrina.

No doubt, having the 12.10pm Mass as a traditional Mass will introduce many new people to the Mass of Ages.
