The Motu Proprio

News has emerged that a meeting of senior bishops representing Episcopal Conferences from around the world took place in Rome yesterday (27th June). Cardinal Bertone, Vatican Secretary of State, explained to the meeting about the forthcoming Motu Proprio on the liberation of the use of the traditional rite for the celebration of Mass; Afterwards the Holy Father joined the meeting for an hour and spoke with many of the bishops.

The Motu Proprio will be issued shortly, some say on 7th July, others say sooner. The bishops will be receiving an accompanying letter of greater length.

There is little information about the contents of either the Motu Proprio or the letter to the bishops, except there will be some provision to safeguard the authority of bishops in their dioceses.

Deo Gratias.
